What to Do If You Find a Scorpion in Your House

What to Do If You Find a Scorpion in Your House

First, don't touch it with your hands. If you find a bark scorpion inside, the safe move is to contain or remove it carefully, check the immediate area, and then address why it got in. One scorpion usually signals pressure around your home and an open entry point, not necessarily an infestation, but a reason to act.

In the moment

  • Don't handle it directly. Use a cup and a stiff piece of paper to trap and release it well away from the house, or dispatch it with a shoe while wearing closed footwear.
  • Use a UV flashlight to check nearby. Bark scorpions glow under UV light, so a quick scan of the room, baseboards, and corners can reveal others.
  • Check shoes, beds, and towels. Scorpions like tight, dark spaces. Shake out items left on the floor.
  • Be careful at night. They're nocturnal and most active after dark.

If someone is stung

A bark scorpion sting is painful and can cause numbness and tingling. Children, older adults, and pets are at higher risk. For a sting, especially with severe symptoms, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

What to do next

Finding one inside means it's worth treating the exterior, sealing the entry points, and reducing the crickets that draw scorpions in. Treating only indoors won't solve it, because the source is outside.

Redline includes scorpion control in our standard plan across the East Valley and can get a barrier up fast. New customers get $50–$100 off their first service. Call or text 480-960-2010.

FAQ

Does finding one scorpion mean I have an infestation?

Not necessarily, but it does mean there's pressure outside and a way in. It's a good prompt to get the exterior treated and sealed.

Where do scorpions hide indoors?

Dark, tight spaces, closets, shoes, behind furniture, under sinks, and along baseboards. A UV flashlight makes them much easier to find.

Scorpion stings are a medical topic, for any sting with severe symptoms, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
